Social sites are very easy to find as there are so many on the web now. The sequence to use when looking for suitable sites is as follows.

  1. The first step, as always, is to search Google.
  2. Make sure you include DOFOLLOW in the search phrase.
  3. When you find a DoFollow site, check its PR (PageRank).

Google Page Rank

Without going into huge detail and boring  you to sleep, the higher the Google PR (meaning a site that impresses them with their content, number of visitors a day, how well it is built, how well it functions and many other factors that change all the time) the more valuable the backlink is perceived to be.

PR is scored from 0-10 with ten being the highest quality in Google’s opinion. The higher a site’s PR the more authority it has, basicly meaning that Google trusts the site and therefore has ranked them accordingly.

PR is not something that can be earned overnight and getting a PR10 is near on impossible. It would take you and I a whole lifetime without guarantee of even getting PR1.

So if you get your link on high page-ranked sites Google will see your link and say lets check it out and give them some notice, (because you have your link on a trusted site). That’s why when I say get your link on high PR sites you can understand the massive importance of this.

DoFollow And NoFollow

Next the difference between DOfollow and NOfollow. A site that is ‘dofollow’ will allow Google to follow the links on its site back to the site they come from with the authority that Google has given them.

A ‘nofollow’ site, on the other hand, means it has a ‘nofollow’ meta tag that will not let Google trace the link back to your site, and really it’s a waste of time you having your link there. That’s why you must only use dofollow social bookmarking sites.

Simple Timesavers

I have used so many bookmarking sites and wasted so much time finding ways to make this easy that I would like to share a couple of simple time savers with you.

  1. If you need to find the PR of a social bookmarking site, I recommend using hypestat.com. It is 100% free to use and all you do is put in the full URL and the details of the site will show up. This is how I check all sites for info or PR, earnings, keywords etc.
  2. Probably the most helpful thing I can give you is the list that I use:

Delicious is an online bookmarking service that is very useful if you use different web browsers on different computers often. For example, if you want access to your bookmarks at work without having to carry a USB Flash Drive every time you go to work, just remember Delicious and login and you have ‘em all!  This is handy when you use, say Mozilla Firefox at home and Internet Explorer at work. Before we talk about web 2.0 technologies, let us understand the difference between web 1.0 and web 2.0 technologies.

Web 1.0 Technology

In web 1.0 technology, there is very little user generated content. It is mostly one way communication. Nearly all organisations, firms or companies in the Web 1.0 cyberspace had a WWW presence such as a website that reflected whatever it was that identified their organisation. When a user visited a website, what did he look for? He came to understand the company profile i.e. their mission, the company vision, the values they worked by, what manpower they could call on, and about their core strengths. And also about their products, services and solutions they offered their clients. In the event that he wanted to give them feedback about their website or any comments, he would have to either use email, phone, fax or their contact form. So here, there is little interaction of the users with the people running the website. Some of the examples of web 1.0 communication technologies in use were email, phone, fax, registration page, contact form and so on.

Web 2.0 Technologies

Web 2.0 is all about empowering the user to express his or her views, perceptions and perspective. Before, only a very few writers created web pages for a large number of readers to read through. And, one had to therefore depend on such expert sources for getting the required information. In this new world, the Internet becomes a platform for self-expression and education that anyone one can use on their own without seeking an expert’s help. You do not need to depend on anyone now. Web 2.0 refers to the next generation of web users, where the content is user generated which gives people the tools to become creators and publishers. Here, there is a two way interaction among all the users. Web 2.0 is a transforming force that is prompting companies across all industries to do business in a new way, in a better way, characterized by user participation, openness, and networking. We are no longer just looking to the same old sources for information. Social Networking

A social network (0r social news network, as they are sometimes known) is a social structure consisting of nodes (which are usually organizations or individuals) that are grouped by one or more specific types of relation, such as ideas, values, visions, friends etc. In its simplest form, a social network is a user-generated news site, the ‘news’ being whatever the user promotes as news provided it is related to that network’s focus . The existing social networking sites all allow sharing of content between two or more users.

According to some though, these sites are too restrictive in that they restrict their users with limitations. In other words, they are not all flexible. Many of these new online communities cater only to specific interests, e.g. Tribe, Ning. and Classmates. By and large, social networking allows uploading user-generated material, and the sharing of that content between many users online with the same or indeed with different interests completely. Some of the most popular social networking websites on the Internet are FaceBook, MySpace, Friendster, hi5, Live Journal, Orkut and WAYN.

Social Media

Social media is about the practices and technologies that people utilize to promulgate content, experiences, opinions, perspectives, insights and the media themselves. They are works of user-generated video, audio, text or multimedia that are published and shared in a social environment such as an allocated web space, blog, wiki, or video hosting website. These social media sites do not usually offer user interaction with the world the way that social networking sites do but let users interact with the world by giving away disk space within their websites for sharing comments, views, new feature requests etc. Some of the better known social media websites are Squidoo, MySpace, Digg, YouTube, Mashable, Wikipedia, Flickr and Twitter.

Social Bookmarking

As you would imagine, social bookmarking is just a matter of storing people’s favorites (i.e. bookmarks) at a particular URL so that it is easy for anybody to look up the required information rather than waste time searching for it the old-fashioned way. Social bookmarking allows Internet users to store, classify, share and search Internet bookmarks. Some websites that help in this way are Magnolia, Digg, Delicious and Spurl to name but a few.

Within social bookmarking networks, users can store Internet resource lists that they have found useful. These lists can be accessible to the public by any users of the specified network or website. Other users with similar interests can view the links by topic, category, tags, or even randomly. They can further add information like company profiles, images etc. to the space provided to you. You may well ask how people benefit from these websites? Such bookmarking websites can help us in a couple of ways:
