Foreword By The Editor
Chris Green‘s article (below) raises a few of the dos and don’ts of marketing online through social networking. The angle he sees some of the issues from is a little unconventional at times but interesting nonetheless. Social Networking

There are many social networking sites that are very popular among all age groups. They help people to interact with other people from other backgrounds or with similar interests. Some sites, like Twitter, FaceBook, Orkut and LinkedIn, are examples of those that deal with such networking. They primarily allow members to post their details and other information, such as what business they are in, what they deal with, etc. thereby allowing them to effectively advertise on such sites. This article offers some tips on how to use such social media to promote a business.
What’s Needed
The only thing that is needed is a computer with an online connection, although a plan of what is to be done must also be there from the outset. You then need to sort out websites that are reasonably popular and will reach your customers easily. This is not always an easy process but thorough searching can make it easier.
The next step is to study the procedures involved. Each website or network has their own conditions and procedures. You need to understand them before proceeding. There are facilities for posting comments and messages on many websites so you can check out that also.
Your First Post
Draft a post. Be careful in your words as they are going to be read by your potential customers. You can save a personal copy, which may be used to upload. It is not enough to just post it though. You must participate. Upload more and more updates. It will bring the customers close to you.
Paying attention to others views and being an active participant in various discussions can make others listen to what you are trying to say. You can make others feel the way you want when they turn their attention towards you. That is the correct time to grab their interest
The information that is posted must be intriguing in order to get readers engrossed in it. There should be a mixture of general trivia and information as well as contests. This will keep your fans engaged in the community. Apart from business there should be some fun involved as well. Some people like to relax on your page after having a long day.
